TOMMY KONO

(Continued from page 51)

aim was to show continued progress in the sport. Winning or losing a contest is secondary. I would rather gamble for a new record than win a championship by performing my mediocre best. Above all I enjoy competitions. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than to know that I tried my best and won.

When I am not in actual competition then I compete against myself, a challenge where I have to be at my very best. In other words I try to surpass all previous marks made by myself whether the previous marks happen to be world records or not.

There are many factors which help my lifting but I believe that diet and sleep are two of the main factors outside of good training and proper coaching. I have been fortunate in my training in that I was able to show improvement constantly. This has been to a great extent the result of following the right method of training for my needs; but of late, I have made faster gains in my lifts. I attribute this mainly to the correction of my nutritional deficiencies by Dr. Richard W. You of Honolulu, U. S. Olympic team physician. In the past I have made a study of the properties of foods and foodstuffs and I have employed to the best of my knowledge, the correct eating habits. But it wasn't until I placed myself under the capable hands of Dr. You that I really derived the full benefits from the correct nutritional standpoint.

After having all my dietary deficiencies corrected by Dr. You I have maintained on a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and high protein content to continue my progress in lifting. Correct and adequate diet is important in progressive, scientific training as it has proven by my rapid recuperative power during the past year. I am able to arrive at my peak condition faster and remain in top condition over a longer period of time.

Perhaps my worst draw-back in lifting at the present time is my very poor sleeping habit. I sleep soundly and well but the hours of sleep are very short. I often go for weeks at a time with as little as 51⁄2 hours of sleep per night because of the pressure of business and other matters which takes up much of my attention. However, before an important contest I make an effort to increase the hours of sleep to 8 hours per night. I believe that I could show faster improvements on my lifts if I am able to sleep and rest longer hours.

My training does not include hot baths or massage. I do believe that correct use of both the bath and message would help relax and tone the muscles after a strenuous session with the weights but I classify both measures as luxuries that I can do without. I have never used hot bath as a part of my training and only on rare occasions when I have over-trained or cramped my muscles by un-due exerations have I had message.

In conclusion I would like to say that I enjoy lifting and lifters. I have learned the true value of progressive weight resistance as a means to improve one's physical

appearance,

strength, and above all the prize possession of man, health. I have been fortunate to be able to travel around

the world, visit many different countries, meet kings and dignitaries and have made many foreign friends because of the ability I have developed through the use of weights. But above all I have won my health, and that alone was worth all the time and effort that I have spent in the weight training

room.

MELBOURNE

(Continued from page 18) These incidents will help the reader to realize the quality of this Russian Featherweight.

During the Helsinki European tourney this year Chimiskayan Cleaned 303 lbs. 'too far forward' and was gradually losing control'. Like a flash he swivelled his rear leg to the 'front', which left him holding the bar in the 'Squat' position.

I am told that he took about eight seconds to 'struggle up'... after which he successfully concluded the lift.

He is a good 'Jerker' and when he made his 315-lb. record at Vienna in 1954 he held the weight aloft for many seconds and smiled at the audience in delight.

For some years now 1st and 2nd places have gone to the Russians easily. So much so that they have been able to take chances' with each other, in the struggle for the title but always without risk to the Team's score. Udodov in particular has been noteworthy in this respect... but at Melbourne, with Berger to take into account, all risks will be ruled out, naturally, and we may see Udodov make the most of every ounce in this encounter.

The Italian Sebastian Manironi must not be forgotten. He is still improving and has made 220-231-297 lbs. this year the last lift being a new Italian record.

Bantam Kamal Mahgoub of Egypt writes saying that his 20-yr-old brother 'Ali' (when 4 lbs. overweight) made 231-231-308 lbs. The lifting is going to be very rugged in this division-with an untried 19-yr-old American youth pitting himself against the two most brilliant Russian Featherweights of all time.

The American's best lifts already total 770 lbs. (240-230-300) however, and when talent of this calibre comes along at such an early age, it seldom stays still for long, and the tendency is usually upward. Knowing something of the background of the two Russians -it just doesn't seem possible for a mere lad to succeed against the known prowess of these Soviet athletes.

But one point is outstanding When Udodov and Chimiskayan were 19 years of age-they were certainly not handling anything like the poundages that Isaac Berger is lifting now: a fact I consider to be of the greatest significance.

'Miracles' have been happening in this class ever since 1948 when Mahmoud Fayad seared his way across the Featherweight lifting firmament, so I intend to keep an open mind about the order of the first three men..

Chimiskayan holds three of the four records in this division, but Victor Korzh, who is only 22 years old, has made a 731-lb. total. . . and may be one of the Soviet 'secret reserves' at Melbourne.

STRENGTH AND

HEALTH

Any Lightweight 'speculation' is naturally limited by certain factors. But, if the U. S. does not make a lightweight entry, then the USSR will certainly not experiment with a 'dual' entry. and Nikolai Kostylev will probably be their final choice, in spite of the fact that Falomiev is making about 248-248-330-lbs.

con-

'Nikki' Kostylev may one day go to the Middleweight division, and tinue to astonish the weightlifting world. But not yet I should imagine. In spite of bodyweight reductions Kostylev often Presses 248 lbs. and may be due for a slight increase at Melbourne. His Munich debut which resulted in a Press of 248 and a Snatch of 275 lbs. was again duplicated in June at the Helsinki European meeting .. except that it was an official record of 2751⁄2 lbs. this time, and having succeeded with 259 and 275 lbs. Snatch he didn't bother to use his final attempt. On at least four occasions this lifter had handled this poundageand may at Melbourne succeed with a fabulous 281 lbs. He C&Jerked 325 lbs. at Hensinki also . but 'lowered' the bar too soon and was not credited with the lift. Expected 'potential' however all point to an 853-9 lb. total. There is only one Nikolai Kostylev-and he is unique.

Egypt has always been prominent in the Lightweight ranks we must bear in mind, but reports state that Khalifa Gouda has had to drop training through family bereavement. Newcomer Mahmoud Elmy has made 231-264-308 lbs. however... the Snatch being a new national record. . . So a double entry by Egypt in this class might be a good move on her part.

With a couple of years more lifting behind him, Isaac Berger may gravitate to this section... interesting thought.

Some great lifts have been made in the 148 lb. section at various timesand the division has always ranked 'high' in FORMULA ratings.

The oldest existing record today was made 17 years ago by Ibrahim Shams at 142 lbs. bodyweight-with a Clean & Jerk of 338 lbs. which has withstood the onslaughts of all comers in spite of everything.

I never thought I would live to see the day when this Egyptian's 259 lb. Snatch would be exceeded by 16 lbs.

but Kostylev usually commences at the 259 lb. mark.

F. Nikitin has raised the Press limit steadily from 242 lbs. to 2651⁄2 lbs. But already another Russian has notched 271 lbs. ... and so the onslaught goes

on.

Among the most remarkable Lightweight feats ever to be made in world competition were Tommy Kono's two successful Squat Cleans with 341 lbs. at Helsinki in 1952 ... and I'm thinking we may have to wait a long time before we see its equal-even though Tommy failed with the Jerk each time. The final American strategy in the 165 and 181 lb. divisions is far from clear-naturally, since the possibility of a 'dual' entry by Tommy Kono and Pete George may materialize, unexpectedly, through different causes. The Russian Middleweight will almost certainly be Feodor Bogdanovsky, and outstanding achievements of this athlete recently, practically guarantee a (Continued on page 54)
